About MRI

What Is an MRI Scan?

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) uses a powerful magnetic field and radio waves — not radiation — to produce detailed cross-sectional images of the body’s internal structures. MRI provides visibility of soft tissues, joints, organs, and the nervous system that X-Ray alone cannot offer.

Brain & Spine
MRI of the brain and spinal cord is used to assess neurological conditions, headaches, numbness, weakness, and injury to the nervous system.
Joints & Musculoskeletal
MRI clearly shows cartilage, tendons, ligaments, and muscles — commonly used for knee, shoulder, hip, and wrist injuries.
Abdominal & Pelvic Organs
MRI provides detailed imaging of the liver, kidneys, prostate, uterus, ovaries, and other abdominal and pelvic structures.
Vascular Structures
MR Angiography (MRA) can evaluate blood vessels and detect abnormalities without the need for invasive procedures or contrast in some cases.
Tumour & Cancer Staging
MRI is used in the detection, characterization, and staging of certain tumours as directed by your referring physician or specialist.
No Ionizing Radiation
MRI does not use X-Ray radiation, making it a preferred imaging option when detailed, repeated, or prolonged imaging is required.
What to Expect

Your MRI Appointment & How to Prepare

011
Arrive & Check In
Arrive at least 15 minutes early with your referral and health card. Our team will review your paperwork and complete safety screening.
022
Safety Screening & Preparation
You will be asked to remove all metal objects, change if needed, and complete an MRI safety form. Inform the technologist of any implants or prior surgeries.
033
The MRI Scan
You will lie on a padded table that moves into the MRI machine. The scanner produces sounds during imaging — earplugs or headphones are provided. It is important to remain still.
044
Done — No Recovery
MRI uses no radiation and requires no recovery time. You can return to normal activities immediately. Your report is sent to your referring physician.

Safety & Screening

MRI Safety Screening

MRI uses a powerful magnetic field, so certain conditions require special precautions. Let our team know if any of the following apply to you before your appointment.

Pacemakers & Implants
Cardiac devices, neurostimulators, and some surgical implants may not be compatible with the MRI’s magnetic field. Tell our team about any implanted devices beforehand.
Metal Fragments or Prior Surgery
Shrapnel, metal shavings, or previous injuries involving metal require a safety review before scanning.
Pregnancy
Let us know if you are or may be pregnant so our team can determine if any additional precautions are needed.
Claustrophobia
If enclosed spaces make you anxious, let our team know when booking — support options are available to help you through the scan.
Kidney Function
If your exam requires contrast, we may ask about kidney function beforehand to ensure it can be used safely.
Tattoos & Piercings
Some tattoo inks and body piercings can interact with the scanner. Let the technologist know before your exam.

This is general information only and does not replace the MRI safety screening completed with our team before your appointment.
