About the Exam

What Is Mammography?

Mammography is a specialized low-dose X-ray exam used to detect breast cancer early — often before symptoms develop. MMI uses advanced digital mammography (DR) technology for high-quality imaging at our Nepean and Kanata clinics. Early detection significantly improves treatment outcomes by identifying changes while they are small and most treatable.

Detect Breast Cancer Early

High-resolution digital images captured and reviewed electronically for precise evaluation
Screening for Symptom-Free Patients
Routine breast health monitoring for women with no current breast concerns or symptoms
Diagnostic for Symptoms or Concerns
Ordered by a physician when a lump, pain, or tissue change is present
OBSP Self-Referral Available
Eligible women 50–69 can book directly through the Ontario Breast Screening Program — no doctor needed

What to Expect

Your Mammography Visit & How to Prepare

011
Arrive & Register
Check in at reception with your health card and requisition (diagnostic) or OBSP screening eligibility. Wear a two-piece outfit and avoid deodorant, powder, or lotion on the day of your exam.
022
Prepare for the Exam
A technologist will guide you to a private changing room. You will undress from the waist up and be provided a gown. Bring or share prior mammography images for comparison if available.
033
The Imaging Exam
The technologist positions each breast on a flat platform and a compression paddle applies gentle, even pressure for a few seconds. The exam is typically complete in 20–30 minutes.
044
Results & Next Steps
A radiologist reviews your images and sends a report to your physician. OBSP results are mailed within 2–3 weeks. Access your images anytime through PocketHealth.

Ontario Breast Screening Program

Ontario Breast Screening Program (OBSP)

The OBSP is a province-wide program providing free, organized breast cancer screening for women between 50 and 69 years of age. Merivale Medical Imaging is an accredited OBSP site at our Nepean and Kanata locations. Eligible women can self-refer — no doctor’s requisition required.

OHIP-Covered Screening Ages 50–69 Can Self-Refer Accredited OBSP Site
Who Qualifies?

Women aged 50–69 with an OHIP card who have no current breast symptoms and have not had a mammogram in the past year may be eligible for OBSP screening.

Is a Referral Needed?

No. Women in the eligible age range can call our Nepean or Kanata clinic directly to book an OBSP mammogram — no physician referral is required for screening.

What About Results?

OBSP participants receive their results by mail within 2–3 weeks. Images can also be accessed digitally through PocketHealth after the appointment.

Women Under 50 or Over 69

Women outside the standard OBSP age range may still be eligible for a mammogram with a physician referral. Speak with your doctor about diagnostic mammography options.

Women With Symptoms

If you have a lump, nipple discharge, breast pain, or other symptoms, you will need a physician requisition for a diagnostic mammogram rather than the OBSP screening pathway.

Where to Book

Mammography and OBSP screening are available at our Nepean (1545 Merivale Rd) and Kanata (110 Michael Cowpland Dr) locations. Call or book online today.
