About the Exam

What Does General Ultrasound Evaluate?

General ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves to produce real-time images of internal organs and soft tissues — without radiation. It helps physicians evaluate a wide range of conditions across the abdomen, pelvis, and soft tissues.

Abdominal Organs
Ultrasound is widely used to evaluate the liver, gallbladder, pancreas, kidneys, and spleen for masses, stones, and other structural changes.
Thyroid & Neck
Thyroid ultrasound evaluates nodules, cysts, and other changes in the thyroid gland and surrounding neck structures.
Pelvic & Gynecological
Pelvic ultrasound examines the uterus, ovaries, and pelvic organs — commonly used in gynecological and reproductive evaluations.
Pregnancy Imaging
Obstetric ultrasound is used throughout pregnancy to monitor fetal development, position, and health at various stages.
Soft Tissue & Breast
Soft tissue ultrasound evaluates lumps, masses, and superficial structures. Breast ultrasound is used in conjunction with mammography to further evaluate areas of concern.
Scrotal & Testicular
Scrotal ultrasound is used to evaluate testicular lumps, pain, swelling, and vascular abnormalities.
What to Expect

Your Ultrasound Appointment & How to Prepare

011
Arrival & Check-In
Arrive with your referral and health card. Inform staff of any preparation you completed such as fasting or a full bladder, as required for your exam.
022
Preparation
You may be asked to change into a gown and lie on an examination table. Our sonographer will apply gel to the skin to improve contact with the transducer.
033
The Imaging Exam
The sonographer will move the transducer over the exam area to capture images. The exam is painless. You may feel light pressure from the transducer.
044
Done — No Recovery
Most ultrasound exams require no recovery time. You can return to normal activity immediately. Results are sent to your referring physician.

Getting Ready for Your Ultrasound

Preparation can vary depending on the type of ultrasound exam. A few common considerations are listed below — specific instructions will be provided when your appointment is booked.

Full Bladder
Some pelvic and abdominal exams require a full bladder. Follow the specific instructions provided when your appointment is booked.
Fasting Requirements
Certain abdominal exams, such as gallbladder ultrasound, require fasting for several hours beforehand.
Pregnancy
Let us know if you are or may be pregnant so our team can confirm the appropriate exam and preparation.
Comfortable Clothing
Wear loose, comfortable clothing that allows easy access to the area being examined.
Recent Contrast Studies
Let us know if you have had a recent barium or contrast X-ray exam, as this may affect ultrasound image quality.
Bring Prior Imaging
If you have had prior imaging of the same area, bringing those results can help with comparison.

This is general information only. Please follow the specific preparation instructions provided when your appointment is booked.
