About the Exam

What Is Bone Mineral Density Testing?

BMD testing — also called DEXA (dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry) — measures the density and strength of your bones. Because bone loss often develops silently with age, early detection is critical. The test helps physicians diagnose bone loss, assess fracture risk, and monitor treatment effectiveness.

Diagnose Osteoporosis & Low Bone Mass
Identify bone loss early, before fractures occur
Assess Fracture Risk Accurately
Objective data to guide prevention and treatment decisions
Monitor Osteoporosis Treatment
Track changes in bone density over time to measure progress
Compare to Age & Gender Norms
Results reported as T-scores relative to reference populations
Support Early Intervention
Act before fractures occur with proactive bone health management
Evaluate Medication Effects on Bone
Assess how long-term medications may be affecting bone density
What to Expect

Your BMD Appointment & How to Prepare

011
Arrive & Check In
Complete a brief health history form on arrival. Bring your requisition, health card, and medication list.
022
Prepare for the Scan
You will lie still on a padded table. No injections, no contrast agents, no needles. Completely painless.
033
During the Scan
A low-dose X-ray arm passes slowly over your body, measuring density at the hip and lower spine.
044
After Your Scan
The exam takes 10 to 20 minutes. Return to all normal activities immediately afterward — no recovery needed.

Understanding Your Results

What Does Your BMD Score Mean?

DEXA results are reported as a T-score — a comparison of your bone density to a healthy young adult average. The scale below shows what each range means for your bone health.

NormalOsteopeniaOsteoporosis
T-score > −1.0T-score −1.0 to −2.5T-score < −2.5
Example patient
Normal
T-score above −1.0
Bone density is within the expected healthy range. Regular monitoring may still be recommended depending on age, risk factors, and your physician’s guidance.
Osteopenia
T-score −1.0 to −2.5
Bone density is lower than normal but not yet in the osteoporosis range. This is a signal for early intervention — lifestyle changes and follow-up monitoring are typically recommended.
Osteoporosis
T-score below −2.5
Bone density is significantly reduced, indicating osteoporosis. Your physician will discuss treatment options, fracture risk management, and more frequent monitoring.

T-score interpretation is provided for patient education only. Your physician will review your full report and discuss results with you.

Ministry of Health Guideline

BMD Testing Frequency

Ontario Ministry of Health guidelines govern how often OHIP covers bone mineral density testing.

OHIP Coverage PolicyBaseline & Repeat Testing Limits

Baseline & Repeat Testing: The Ontario Ministry of Health permits one baseline BMD test for screening. Subsequent BMD testing is covered once every 36 months, with the next scan after 60 months. Patients who received BMD testing within the past 36 months are financially responsible for the exam.

High-Risk Patients: For patients receiving osteoporosis treatment or identified as high risk, one BMD scan every 12 months is permitted. Please speak with your referring physician to confirm your eligibility before booking.

High-Risk Factors — Qualifying for Annual Testing

Patients with one or more of the following may be eligible for BMD scans every 12 months.

Osteoporosis Treatment or Monitoring

Patients actively receiving osteoporosis medication or being monitored for treatment response qualify for annual BMD testing.

Height Loss of 0.75 in (1.9 cm) or More
History of Fragility Fractures
Chemotherapy or Rheumatoid Arthritis
Low Body Weight (under 125 lbs / 57 kg)
Long-Term Glucocorticoid Therapy (3+ months)

Patients on corticosteroid therapy for 3 or more months are at elevated fracture risk and may qualify for more frequent testing.

Hyperparathyroidism
Early Menopause (before age 45)
Hypogonadism
Malabsorption Syndromes
