About the Exam

What Is Liver Elastography?

Liver elastography is a specialized ultrasound exam used to evaluate liver stiffness, which can increase as a result of chronic liver disease and fibrosis (scarring). The liver plays a critical role in essential metabolic and biochemical processes, and monitoring changes in liver tissue is important for managing long-term liver conditions. Elastography provides valuable information to help assess disease progression and support clinical decision-making.

Noninvasive & Painless
No needles or incisions, just focused sound waves
No Ionizing Radiation
Safe for repeated follow-up examinations when clinically indicated
Monitors Disease Progression
Supports tracking of chronic liver disease over time
May Reduce Need for Biopsy
Can help limit the need for invasive liver biopsy procedures
What to Expect

Your Liver Elastography Visit & How to Prepare

011
Arrive & Check In
Check in with your requisition and health card. Our team will confirm your exam details before you begin.
022
Preparation
You will lie back comfortably while the technologist applies gel to the skin over the liver. No needles or contrast agents are used.
033
The Imaging Exam
Shear wave elastography uses focused sound waves to measure liver stiffness. The exam is quick, painless, and typically complete in 15–20 minutes.
044
Done, No Recovery Needed
No recovery time is needed. Results are reviewed by a radiologist and sent to your referring physician.

Understanding Your Results

Understanding Liver Fibrosis Staging

Elastography results help physicians estimate the general degree of liver stiffness and fibrosis. Exact cutoffs vary by liver condition. Your physician will interpret your result in the context of your overall health.

Mild

Little to No Fibrosis

Liver stiffness in the normal to mildly elevated range, generally associated with little or no scarring.

Moderate

Moderate Fibrosis

Liver stiffness suggesting a moderate degree of scarring, often prompting closer monitoring.

Advanced

Advanced Fibrosis / Cirrhosis

Liver stiffness in a range associated with advanced scarring or cirrhosis, typically requiring specialist follow-up.

Note: This is general patient education only. Elastography results should always be reviewed and interpreted by your physician alongside your full clinical picture.
