What Is Liver Elastography?
Liver elastography is a specialized ultrasound exam used to evaluate liver stiffness, which can increase as a result of chronic liver disease and fibrosis (scarring). The liver plays a critical role in essential metabolic and biochemical processes, and monitoring changes in liver tissue is important for managing long-term liver conditions. Elastography provides valuable information to help assess disease progression and support clinical decision-making.

Elastography results help physicians estimate the general degree of liver stiffness and fibrosis. Exact cutoffs vary by liver condition. Your physician will interpret your result in the context of your overall health.
Little to No Fibrosis
Liver stiffness in the normal to mildly elevated range, generally associated with little or no scarring.
Moderate Fibrosis
Liver stiffness suggesting a moderate degree of scarring, often prompting closer monitoring.
Advanced Fibrosis / Cirrhosis
Liver stiffness in a range associated with advanced scarring or cirrhosis, typically requiring specialist follow-up.
