About the Exam

What Does Vascular Ultrasound Evaluate?

Vascular ultrasound uses sound waves and Doppler technology to evaluate blood flow through arteries and veins — without radiation or injections. It helps physicians diagnose circulation problems, blockages, and vascular disease throughout the body.

Carotid Artery Ultrasound
Evaluates the carotid arteries in the neck for plaque buildup, stenosis, or abnormal blood flow that may indicate stroke risk.
Peripheral Arterial Studies
Assesses blood flow in the arms and legs to identify arterial disease, blockages, or narrowing affecting circulation.
Venous Doppler
Evaluates veins — primarily in the legs — for deep vein thrombosis (DVT), venous insufficiency, or abnormal flow patterns.
Ankle-Brachial Index (ABI)
A non-invasive test comparing blood pressure at the ankle and arm to screen for peripheral artery disease (PAD).
Abdominal Aorta
Screens the abdominal aorta for aneurysm or enlargement, often used in patients with cardiovascular risk factors.
Safe & Non-Invasive
Vascular ultrasound uses no radiation and requires no injections. It is a comfortable, non-invasive diagnostic tool for vascular assessment.
What to Expect

Your Vascular Ultrasound Appointment & How to Prepare

Arrival & Check-In
Arrive with your referral and health card. Wear comfortable, loose clothing. Let staff know which exam you have been referred for.

Positioning
You will lie on an exam table. Our sonographer will apply gel to the skin over the area being examined and position the transducer to capture images.

The Imaging Exam
The sonographer will evaluate blood vessels and flow using Doppler imaging. The exam is painless. You may feel mild pressure from the transducer or cuff.

Done — No Recovery
No recovery or downtime is required. You may resume normal activity immediately. Your report is sent directly to your referring physician.

Preparation instructions vary depending on the exam. Please follow the instructions provided when your appointment is booked. Bring your health card, requisition, and any relevant documents. If you are unsure how to prepare, contact Merivale Medical Imaging before your appointment.

Understanding Your ABI Results

The Ankle-Brachial Index (ABI) compares blood pressure at the ankle and arm to screen for peripheral artery disease (PAD). The ranges below show what each result may mean.

ABI 1.00 – 1.40
Normal
Normal blood flow with no significant narrowing detected in the leg arteries.
ABI 0.41 – 0.99
Mild to Moderate PAD
Reduced blood flow that may indicate early to moderate peripheral artery disease. Your physician will review these results with you.
ABI ≤ 0.40
Severe PAD
Significantly reduced blood flow, indicating more advanced disease. Your physician will discuss treatment options and next steps.

ABI interpretation is provided for patient education only. Your physician will review your full report and discuss results with you.
