What is Mammography

Mammography is a specialized X-ray imaging exam used to detect breast cancer at its earliest stages—often before physical symptoms develop. Early detection through mammography significantly improves treatment outcomes by identifying abnormalities while they are small and most treatable.

Mammography exams are performed using low-dose radiation and are considered safe and effective for routine breast health screening and diagnostic evaluation.

What to Expect During Your Mammogram Exam

When you arrive at MMI for your mammogram, you will be asked to complete a brief questionnaire before changing into a gown. During the exam, each breast is positioned and gently compressed between two plates to obtain clear, high-quality images. Compression is necessary for accurate imaging and to minimize radiation exposure. While some discomfort may be experienced, the procedure should not cause significant pain and is completed quickly.

MMI utilizes advanced DR digital mammography technology, allowing images to be captured and reviewed electronically to support precise diagnosis.

Types of Mammography Exams

SCREENING MAMMOGRAMS

Performed for individuals without symptoms, screening mammograms are used for routine breast cancer detection and early identification of changes.

DIAGNOSTIC MAMMOGRAMS

Diagnostic mammograms are performed when symptoms such as breast pain, a lump, or tissue changes are present. These exams may be combined with breast ultrasound for further evaluation.

MMI is affiliated with the Ontario Breast Screening Program (OBSP), which provides eligible women with access to regular screening mammograms and ongoing reminders to support long-term breast health.
