Doppler ultrasound imaging used to evaluate blood flow in arteries and veins, including testing for circulation and clotting conditions. ABI testing may be performed as part of arterial studies.
Vascular ultrasound, also known as Doppler ultrasound, is a noninvasive imaging exam used to evaluate blood flow through arteries and veins. This exam helps diagnose a range of arterial and venous conditions that may affect circulation, including narrowing or blockage of blood vessels, blood clots, and valve dysfunction.
Vascular ultrasound does not use ionizing radiation or contrast dye and does not require needles or anesthesia.
During your exam, you will lie comfortably on an examination table while a technologist applies gel to the area being evaluated. A handheld transducer is placed on the skin to obtain images and assess blood flow. You may feel light pressure as measurements are taken.
Depending on the type of study, blood pressure measurements may also be taken at the arms, ankles, or wrists. Exams are painless and typically completed within a short period of time. For arterial studies, blood pressure measurements may be taken at the arms and ankles as part of Ankle Brachial Index (ABI) testing.
Evaluate blood flow in arteries and veins
Assess carotid arteries supplying blood to the brain
Detect blood clots (deep vein thrombosis)
Evaluate venous valve function and reflux
Assess arterial circulation in the arms, legs, and abdomen
Support diagnosis of peripheral arterial disease (ABI testing)
Vascular studies performed at MMI are interpreted by vascular surgeons from The Ottawa Hospital Vascular Department.
